Love in ruins
how much time must pass for a destroyed building to become holy ruins?
Today I stood inside something broken the remains of a once massive palace now just crumpled stone pillars and called it beautiful which felt dangerous bittersweet in a way because before you no one had ever looked at me after what happened and said what a marvel how strong to have stayed standing the columns were cracked the stone was missing whole pieces of itself and still people came from everywhere just to look I wanted to ask how long it takes for damage to become architecture how much time must pass before the wound is allowed to be worshipped but the sun was setting and my love was waiting with gelato so instead I touched the old wall gently as if empathy could travel backward through stone love does not rebuild you into something untouched love stand in the ruins and says look look what survived look how magnificent.
By the time you are reading this I will be in Germany visiting my boyfriend’s Oma for her 90th birthday. If you enjoyed this piece, take a look at my collection A Crown of Sunlit Things. I wrote all of those poems in Europe a year ago while visiting my boyfriend’s hometown.
Thank you for being here 🫶🏻
